| 5/10/2004 UNITED STATES - USDoS Travel Alert - The Bahamas (Country threat level - ): The U.S. Department of State has issued the following Public Announcement for The Bahamas on 5 October 2004: "This Public Announcement is being issued to alert American citizens to travel conditions in The Bahamas in the aftermath of Hurricane Jeanne. This Public Announcement replaces the Travel Warning issued September 27, 2004. It expires on November 15, 2004. Grand Bahama International Airport in Freeport suffered wind and water damage during the storm. The airport re-opened for limited daylight operations under VFR (visual flight rules) conditions on September 27, 2004. U.S. citizens planning to travel to Freeport by air should check with their air carrier to determine flight schedules and operations. The majority of Grand Bahama remains without power or phone service, and there is a shortage of drinking water. Recovery operations from Hurricane Jeanne continue and public services remain minimal or non-existent in many places throughout the island. The Embassy advises U.S. citizens to consider postponing travel to Grand Bahama until basic services are restored. Abaco also suffered substantial wind and water damage. U.S. citizens are advised to consult with the local island Administrator at 242 367-3067 before scheduling travel. In Nassau, both the airport and seaport are open. Public services are available and traffic is normal. The Embassy is open and fully staffed. The Customs and Border Protection Pre-Clearance Facility at Nassau Airport is also operating. Travelers should check with their airlines about specific flight schedules."
