On 30 June 2024, the U.S. Department of Defense raised the alert status for several U.S. military barracks across Europe to “Force Protection Charlie” — the second-highest level of warning in a five-tier system — which signifies that the department received credible intelligence indicating the possibility of a terrorist attack. In particular, the heightened alert applies to U.S. military facilities in Germany, including the U.S. Army garrison in Stuttgart — where the U.S. European Command is headquartered. Similar alerts were issued for other bases in Germany, such as the Army’s Rheinland-Pfalz and Ramstein Air Base, as well as the Spangdahlem Air Base, both located in the western part of the country. Additionally, military installations in Romania, Bulgaria, and the Aviano Air Base in Italy were also included. No further information has emerged regarding a motive for the heightened level of alert; however, there have been increased concerns regarding the possibility of terrorism-related incidents in Western Europe, particularly Germany and France, fueled by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
