Early on 12 December 2023, militants affiliated with Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan — believed to be a splinter group of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan — launched an attack on a police station in the northwestern city of Dera Ismail Khan, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. A vehicle packed with explosives rammed the main entrance of the Daraban police station and detonated, partially collapsing the building. At least six gunmen then attacked the facility, which was being used by the Pakistani military, ensuing hourslong gunbattle with security personnel. At least 23 soldiers were killed during the attack and 32 others were wounded. All six assailants were also killed in the event.
