On the morning of 19 October 2023, anonymous bomb threats were sent via email to multiple French airports for a second consecutive day. Local officials then evacuated passengers and staff members from the airports in Bordeaux, Lille, Montpellier and Nantes, conducted security searches and determined the threats to be false alarms. French officials suspect that young people are making such fraudulent threats and have warned that those found responsible will be sentenced up to three years in prison and fined 45,000 euros (47,000 U.S. dollars). The country has been under an “attack emergency” security alert level following a 13 October stabbing at a secondary school in the northern city of Arras, which resulted in the deaths of two teachers.
