On 28 November 2023, Finnish authorities announced that the Raja-Jooseppi border crossing with Russia will be shut down amid an increasing influx of migrants into Finland.  The border crossing — currently slated to be closed from 29 November to 13 December — was the only operational crossing point out of the eight checkpoints along the Finnish border with Russia. Travelers are now completely prohibited from entry into Finland from Russia; however, frieght trucks will still be allowed to cross the border. The recent border closure intends to prevent asylum seekers from the Middle East and North Africa from entry into Finland.
