On 12 September 2023, the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA) – a Tuareg nomadic rebel group seeking autonomy – assaulted the town of Bourem and its associated military camp, located approximately 82 km (51 mi) north of the city of Gao. CMA fighters assaulted four military positions around the town and briefly seized the area before they stole ammunition, weapons and vehicles during a retreat. At least 46 rebel fighters were killed in the clash, along with 10 Malian soldiers.
