On 8 December 2020, Switzerland’s national rail operator Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) announced that all cross-border train services with Italy will be suspended indefinitely as of 10 December. SBB trains will continue to operate to Switzerland’s border with Italy. According to the SBB, Swiss train operators do not have the capacity to comply with new COVID-19 safety checks mandated by the Italian government, which requires operators to conduct temperature checks on all passengers, while passengers are also required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test and a document authorizing travel from their employers.
