On 27 September 2023, the U.S. Embassy in Ouagadougou issued a Demonstration Alert, which reads in part as follows: “Demonstrations expected in Ouagadougou, from Wednesday, September 27 through October 2, 2023. Demonstrations marking the first anniversary of the Transition Authorities are expected in Ouagadougou and throughout the country from today, Wednesday, September 27 through Monday, October 2. In Ouagadougou, the demonstrations may occur at several sites, including Place de la Nation, and neighborhoods, including Ouaga 2000. We expect similar rallies may be held in other cities in Burkina Faso. Rallies in support of the Transition Authorities occurred in Ouagadougou overnight from Tuesday, September 26 to Wednesday, September 27. The rallies were generally peaceful. U.S. government personnel have been advised to limit nighttime travel, avoid the demonstration areas, and expect roadblocks and groups of demonstrators near the impacted areas. Demonstrations intended to be peaceful can quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence.”
