On 4 May 2023, thousands of demonstrators participated in “Disruption Day to Demand Equality” protests in locations across the country — including in Haifa, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv. Protesters temporarily blocked Highway 431 in Jerusalem, the Ayalon Highway in Tel Aviv, and several other highways throughout the country. Demonstrators also protested outside the offices of state religious institutions, at the home of a senior ultra-Orthodox rabbi in Bnei Brak, and outside the homes of several Cabinet members — including the finance minister and national security minister – and outside the president’s residence. Demonstrators were protesting the judicial overhaul planned by the government; what they believe to be unfair military exemptions for ultra-Orthodox Jews; and the rising cost of living in the country. Authorities detained at least four protesters in Haifa and Tel Aviv.
