On 27 April 2022, officials reported that a recent escalation in gang violence in four neighborhoods in the northern area of the capital Port-au-Prince has forced thousands of individuals to flee their residences. Since the violent clashes increased in intensity on 24 April, at least 20 people have been killed with 10 others injured, and at least 12 homes have been razed. Public transit and business operations are disrupted in the affected areas. Although a stray bullet hit a U.N. helicopter stationed on a runway at Port-au-Prince International Airport (MTPP/PAP), the airport remains operational. Authorities from the Civil Protection Agency expect the conflict to worsen in the coming days.
