As of 1500 local time (1200 UTC) on 31 July 2023, members of the Palestinian political movement Fatah and other Islamist elements have engaged in fighting in the Ein al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp near the city of Sidon, located approximately 45 km (30 mi) south of the capital Beirut. The militants are using machine guns, sniper rifles and rocket-propelled grenades during the fighting that began on 29 July when an unknown gunman attempted to assassinate an Islamist activist in the camp. At least nine people have been killed in the ongoing conflict and 46 others have been injured, including Lebanese military personnel. Authorities have sealed off the entrances and exits to the camp and advised residents of Sidon to avoid nearby areas due to the risks posed by stray bullets and other ordnance.
