A temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas expired early on 1 December 2023. Fighting between the two warring sides has since resumed in the Gaza Strip, where heavy gunfire and artillery strikes have been reported. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that it struck more than 200 targets in Gaza, including in the southern cities of Rafah and Khan Younis, following the expiration of the ceasefire. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza, more than 100 people have since been killed in the enclave. IDF has warned residents of southern Gaza to evacuate as it resumed its bombing campaign.
