On 15 December 2023, the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki issued an alert regarding the status of Finland-Russia border crossings, which reads in part as follows: “Finnish authorities have announced the closure of the entire eastern border after a temporary reopening of the Vaalimaa and Niirala eastern border crossings. This measure will begin at 8 p.m. on December 15, 2023, and remain in effect until January 14, 2024. During this month-long period, all land border crossing points between Finland and Russia will be closed. U.S. Embassy Helsinki anticipates the following status for Finland/Russia ports of entry:
- The Vaalimaa, Nuijamaa, Imatra, Niirala, Vartius, Kuusamo, Salla, and Raja-Jooseppiborder crossing points are all closed until January 14, 2024.
