On 31 May 2023, a fire broke out at the Afipsky oil refinery in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region — located approximately 80 km (50 mi) east of the Black Sea port of Novorossisk — following a reported drone attack on the facility. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which caused no injuries or deaths. On the same day, a drone fell on the Ilsky refinery, located about 15 km from the Afipsky refinery, but so far there have been no reports of damage or injuries. Russian officials claim that a bomb disposal unit destroyed the projectile. The latest attacks occurred one day after drones targeted buildings in the Russian capital Moscow, injuring at least two people; the Russian Defense Ministry has accused the Ukrainian government of being behind the assaults.
