On the afternoon of 16 May 2023, gunmen ambushed a convoy that was transporting U.S. Embassy personnel along Atani-Osamale road in the Ogbaru region of the southeastern Nigerian state of Anambra. Four people were killed in the attack, including two local employees of the U.S. Consulate and two police officers. Additionally, the assailants abducted three people — a driver and two police officers — and set their vehicle on fire. No U.S. nationals were harmed in the attack. A local police spokesperson stated that security personnel have launched a rescue and recovery operation for those kidnapped during the event. While no group has claimed responsibility, the Indigenous People of Biafra separatist group actively operates in the region and is often accused of perpetrating violence.
