At approximately 1330 local time (1830 UTC) on 23 September 2021, a gunman opened fire inside a grocery store in Collierville, Tennessee, a town located nearly 30 mi (50 km) east of the city of Memphis. The gunshots caused panic among individuals inside the store, prompting them to flee the building. One person died in the shooting and at least 12 others were wounded. Four of those victims remain hospitalized in critical condition. The assailant also died at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. An investigation is underway to determine the motive for the shooting; authorities are looking into reports that the assailant may have been a disgruntled employee.
