On the afternoon of 21 December 2023, a gunman opened fire in the Faculty of Philosophy building on the campus of Charles University — located in Old Town Prague’s Jan Palach Square — killing at least 14 people. Approximately 25 others were wounded in the shooting. According to local police, the gunman, a student at the university, committed suicide shortly after police officers arrived at the scene and surrounded him. Immediately following the attack, police officers evacuated all students from the university and cordoned off the areas within the vicinity. The motive for the shooting is currently under investigation. Authorities suspect the assailant carried out two additional killings prior to the university attack. Czech officials have declared 23 December a day of mourning.
