At approximately 0830 local time (0530 UTC) on 5 June 2024, a gunman opened fire near the entrance of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, located in the northeastern Awkar suburb of the capital city. A member of the embassy’s security team was wounded in the shooting. Lebanese security personnel reportedly returned fire and wounded the assailant, a Syrian national, who was subsequently taken into custody. No group has claimed responsibility for the shooting. The embassy will remain closed to the public for the remainder of the day but is scheduled to resume normal operations on 6 June.
