At approximately 1015 local time (1515 UTC) on 4 July 2022, a gunman opened fire on an Independence Day parade held along Central Avenue and Second Street in Highland Park, Illinois — located approximately 25 mi (40 km) north of downtown Chicago. The assailant, who was armed with a high-powered rifle, began shooting indiscriminately at the crowd from the rooftop of a camping store, killing six people and wounding at least 30 others. Hundreds of parade participants fled the area soon after gunshots were heard. Police officers detained a suspect nearly nine hours after the shooting. An investigation to determine a motive for the shooting remains underway.
