On the morning of 18 May 2023, gunmen launched an attack on a ranger-escorted convoy from the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN) near Virunga National Park in the Lubero territory of the eastern North Kivu province. The assailants ambushed the convoy shortly after it departed from Kivandya village, killing three rangers and a technical worker, and wounding at least six more people. ICCN officials believe the gunmen who perpetrated the attack belong to the local Mai Mai militia group.
