On 22 January 2024, gunmen opened fire on a crowd of demonstrators gathered outside a police sub-station in the city of Jérémie, Grand’Anse department — located approximately 190 km (120 mi) east of the capital Port-au-Prince. At least three people were killed in the shooting and several others were injured. The demonstrators had gathered at the site for a second consecutive day of protests calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. The gunmen were alleged to be staff members of a local public official who was recently appointed by the prime minister.
