On the evening of 13 May 2023, a gunman opened fire from a moving vehicle in the commune of Villerupt, located in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department near the French border with Luxembourg. At least five people were wounded, including three seriously. The assailant’s vehicle was later found burned near a forest in the commune of Fameck. Authorities arrested the suspected perpetrator during the early hours of 15 May. The motive for the shooting is unknown, although local officials suspect that the event is likely related to drug trafficking.
