On the evening of 8 February 2024, local authorities imposed an indefinite curfew and suspended internet services in the city of Haldwani, located in the northern Uttarakhand state, due to an outbreak of violence in the Banbhulpura area following the demolition of an unauthorized mosque and an adjacent seminary. Five people were killed and more than 150 police officers were injured in clashes between rioters and police officers, who fired live ammunition and tear gas to disperse the crowd that set ablaze several vehicles and buildings. Uttarakhand state government officials have also authorized security forces to cordon off all roadways leading to the Banbhulpura area and to use deadly force in order to contain the violence. The unrest broke out after thousands of protesters blocked police and government officials who had arrived to demolish the buildings after a court ruling that the constructions lacked permits.
