On 16 May 2023, government officials imposed an indefinite countrywide nightly curfew in an effort to combat increasing rates of gun violence across Lesotho. All residents are prohibited from traveling outdoors from 2200-0400 local time (2000-0200 UTC) until further notice, and those found in violation of the curfew could be subject to fines or up to two years imprisonment. A heightened security presence is likely across the kingdom while the curfew remains in effect. The curfew order follows the murder of a prominent local investigative journalist in the capital Maseru on 14 May.
