On 20 October 2022, Islamist insurgents attacked a ruby mining operation owned by the India-based DiaColor International DMCC company in the Muaja village area of Cabo Delgado province — located east of Montepuez, the province’s second largest city. According to local media reports, communication with the management at the mine has been compromised, and additional details regarding the attack are unavailable. In a related development, officials at Montepuez Ruby Mining Limitada — located approximately 12 km (7 mi) northwest of the mine that was attacked — ceased operations and began evacuating local staff to the nearby cities of Nanhupo and Namanhumbir. An Islamist insurgency has been ongoing in Cabo Delgado province since 2017.
