On 15 January 2024, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched 11 ballistic missiles at what they claimed to be the Israeli Mossad headquarters in Kurdistan, an area located near the U.S. consulate in Erbil. Local media reported that at least one of the missiles struck the home of a wealthy Kurdish businessman responsible for facilitating the export of oil from Kurdistan to Israel. At least four people were killed and six more were wounded in the attack. In related news, the Kurdish government announced it had downed three drones targeting a U.S.-led coalition base in the area near Erbil International Airport (ORER/EBL), prompting authorities to briefly divert flights away from the facility
