At approximately 1600 local time (1300 UTC) on 5 August 2022, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted airstrikes against targets allegedly linked to the militant group Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip. The IDF stated that the airstrikes were part of “Operation Dawn Rising” against Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The IDF also declared a “special situation” in Israeli territory situated within 80 km (50 mi) of the Gaza Strip, which includes Tel Aviv. Details on the declaration are expected to be revealed in the coming hours, but the IDF has warned residents within the 80 km-radius to be alert for possible retaliatory rocket fire emanating from the Gaza Strip. Road closures are in place in locations across southern Israel. Operations at Ben Gurion Airport (LLBG/TLV) are currently continuing as normal. The airstrikes followed threats issued by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad against Israel, following a 1 August arrest of one of its senior leaders in the West Bank.
