At approximately 0300 local time on 7 May 2020 (2130 UTC on 6 May), a styrene gas leak occurred at an LG Polymers facility near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh state. According to reports, the gas escaped from two 5,000-ton tanks and spread within a 3 km (2 mi) radius of the plant. Emergency workers later managed to stop the gas leak. However, at least 11 people died while over 500 others were hospitalized after developing various symptoms related to gas exposure. Authorities also evacuated approximately 1,500 residents of a nearby village due to the toxic vapors in the air. Officials have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the leakage.
