On the evening of 19 April 2020, members of the al-Shabab militant Islamist group fired at least nine mortar rounds toward the fortified Green Zone in the capital Mogadishu. According to reports, the mortar shells struck near Halane base camp, which houses several foreign facilities — including Western embassies, the U.N. headquarters and the African Union Mission in Somalia’s (AMISOM) headquarters. At least two people were injured in the attack. In addition, unconfirmed reports indicate that some of the mortar rounds struck near Aden Adde International Airport (HCMM/MGQ) — located adjacent to the Green Zone — but did not cause notable damage to the facility. Al-Shabab militants frequently launch similar attacks on the Green Zone using rocket and mortar fire and other improvised explosive devices, including an attack on 1 March that injured at least one foreign national.
