On 18 December 2022, imprisoned militants undergoing interrogation overpowered security personnel at a counterterrorism facility in the northwestern city of Bannu, situated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and took their weapons. After freeing additional prisoners and seizing control of the facility, the militants — affiliated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban (Pakistani Taliban) — demanded that the Pakistani government guarantee safe passage for all prisoners to the North Waziristan area, which borders Afghanistan. Negotiations between the Pakistani government and leaders of the Pakistani Taliban are ongoing in Afghanistan. Internet services are currently suspended throughout Bannu and police officers have cordoned off Miranshah and Jumma Khan roads leading to the facility. The Pakistani government has made no comment regarding the number of hostages at the facility or their condition. At least one counterterrorism official has been reported killed in the attack.
