At approximately 1220 local time (0920 UTC) on 4 January 2024, a suspected United States military drone strike occurred at a base for the Popular Mobilization Forces paramilitary group in the capital Baghdad. At least three people were killed in the explosion – including a senior leader of the organization – and six others were injured. The strike is believed to have targeted members of Harakat al-Nujaba — an Iran-backed brigade in the PMF – and to be in response to attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria.
