On the morning of 1 June 2023, military police officers exchanged gunfire for a second consecutive day with members of organized crime groups in Rio de Janeiro’s Complexo da Serrinha favela, located in the North Zone approximately 15 km (9 mi) northeast of the city center. Officials have deployed armored vehicles and helicopters to provide additional support to the police officers, who are operating in an area where several streets have been closed to vehicular and foot traffic since the operation began. Police activity has expanded to the neighboring favela communities of Cidade Alta, Cinco Bocas, and Pica-Pau. While municipal health officials have stated that several people with gunshot wounds have been evacuated to local emergency care facilities for treatment, authorities have yet to provide an overall casualty count for the ongoing conflict.
