At approximately 1000 local time (0700 UTC) on 1 February 2023, several mortar shells fired by al-Shabab militants landed in an area near the Somali presidential palace in the capital Mogadishu. Al-Shabab claimed that its militants fired 10 projectiles targeting security checkpoints and the presidential palace, with about five of them reportedly landing near the palace. There were no immediate reports of casualties. A heightened security presence remains in central Mogadishu. The attack occurred amid a security summit hosted by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Muhammad with leaders of neighboring Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti.
