At approximately 1745 local time (0845 UTC) on 3 August 2023, a motorist drove their vehicle into a crowd in the Bundang area of Seongnam city, located approximately 20 km (12 mi) south of the capital Seoul. The assailant reportedly drove their vehicle onto the sidewalk in front of the Seohyeon subway station hitting several pedestrians, exited his vehicle and stabbed individuals inside the nearby AK Plaza department store. At least one person was killed and 13 others were injured; four victims were struck by the vehicle while nine others suffered stab wounds. South Korea’s police chief stated that the attack was a “de facto terrror incident.”

Analyst Comment: Police officers arrested a suspect in connection to the event and cordoned off the area near the stabbing. A motive for the attacks remains unknown, though authorities believe no specific person was targeted by the assailant.
