On 11 October 2023, multiple assailants ambushed a vehicle transporting inspectors affiliated with the Superintendency of Land Transportation of People, Cargo and Goods (SURTAN) on the Cusco-Curahuasi-Abancay highway in the Apurímac department’s Curahuasi district. The attackers, who are believed to be informal transportation workers, stopped the SURTAN vehicle by blocking the roadway with logs and debris and then assaulted its passengers and set fire to the vehicle. One SURTAN inspector was killed, and eight others were injured. Apurímac department has been under a continuously renewed state of emergency declaration that restricts freedom of movement and association since December 2022, following the outbreak of violent anti-government protests in southern Peru.
