On 28 September 2022, multiple explosions occurred inside Baghdad’s Green Zone near Iraq’s parliament building after three Katyusha rockets landed in the area while a parliamentary session was underway. According to local media sources, seven soldiers stationed near the parliament building were injured in the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Earlier in the day, supporters of influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr attempted to storm the Green Zone in an effort to disrupt the legislative session, which voted to reject the resignation of the parliament’s speaker. Riot police officers confronted al-Sadr’s supporters, prompting clashes between security personnel and the demonstrators. Authorities have not yet stated if there were any injuries or arrests during the clashes.
