On the morning of 22 June 2021, military personnel engaged in a gunbattle with members of an anti-junta militia group in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. Local sources reported that the battle occurred in the Chan Mya Thar Si township during a military raid on a boarding school that housed members of the militia group. According to the junta, four militants were killed in the fighting and eight others were arrested. Several soldiers were also reportedly wounded. A group claiming to be Mandalay’s new People’s Defense Force stated that its members recently engaged in a battle with the military. Multiple militia groups have been formed in Myanmar to oppose the junta regime following the 1 February coup, although clashes between the military and such groups were previously confined to rural areas of the country.
