On the evening of 29 June 2024, the Serbian minister of the interior announced that the national terrorism alert level has been increased to “red” after a crossbow attack wounded a police officer stationed outside of the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade. The Serbian government has classified the attack as an act of terrorism. Due to the heightened level of alert, deployments of police officers and security personnel will be increased in and around government buildings, diplomatic missions, as well as in prominent public spaces. According to police officials, the attacker was a Serb national who had ties to Serbia’s Bosniak Muslim minority group. The perpetrator was killed at the scene. Moreover, preliminary investigations indicate that the attacker appeared to have conspired with an additional suspect, who remains at large. No terrorist organizations have claimed responsibility for the attack.
