On 17 August 2023, the Swedish Security Service (SAPO) raised the national terrorist alert level to a four from a three, with four being the second highest level on a 5-tier scale. The change followed several Quran burnings by anti-Islamic activists in the capital Stockholm, which SAPO officials believe have led to an increased risk of attacks carried out by radicalized individuals. While government officials claim that Sweden currently sits as a “priority target” for attacks carried out by radicalized individuals, authorities urged citizens to continue with their normal daily activities.
