On the afternoon of 23 October 2023, suspected members of organized criminal gangs set fire to dozens of buses and passenger vehicles in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The suspects set fire to at least 35 public buses, as well as 10 tourism and charter buses. In response, officials initiated a State of Attention declaration for the city, which increases police surveillance and patrols in select neighborhoods. The perpetrators allegedly set fire to the vehicles in retaliation for the death of a local militia leader after a confrontation with police officers. While there were no reports of injuries from the unrest, authorities arrested at least 12 people. Travelers are urged to avoid several neighborhoods in the West Zone — including Avenida Brasil, Campo Grande, Cosmos, Guaratiba, Inhoaíba, Paciência and SantaCruz.
