On 4 December 2023, President Umaro Sissoco Embalo dissolved Guinea Bissau’s parliament following 1 December armed clashes between Guinean special forces personnel and National Guard soldiers in the capital Bissau. The government has declared that the clashes were part of an attempted coup.  Embalo stated that the “date of the next legislative elections will be set at the appropriate time, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.” A heavy security presence remains in place near government buildings and strategic facilities throughout Bissau, including the National Assembly building as well as state-owned television and radio stations.
