Peru’s Constitutional Court ordered the immediate release of former President Alberto Fujimori, who is serving a 25-year prison sentence for human rights abuses and corruption. In its decision, the court ruled to validate a 2017 pardon granted to Fujimori due to health complications, which was subsequently suspended in 2022 amid pressure from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Following the court verdict, a small protest condemning the pardon took place in Lima’s Plaza San Martin, during which police officers engaged in physical altercations with protesters. No arrests or injuries occurred in relation to the protest.
