On the evening of 8 May 2024, police officers clashed with pro-Palestinian demonstrators in the Rokin area of central Amsterdam. The violence occurred when protesters allegedly threw ammonia at riot police, who were attempting to disperse the encampment that was blocking vehicular traffic in the area. Police officers then used batons to disperse the crowd. Following the clash, authorities detained least 32 protesters. There were no immediate reports of injuries. The day before, police officers had raided encampments at the University of Amsterdam and arrested at least 169 pro-Palestinian demonstrators, who were demanding that the institution sever its ties with Israel due to the ongoing war in Gaza. Additional protests were reported at Utrecht University, located southeast of Amsterdam.
