On the morning of 9 January 2023, police officers and demonstrators exchanged gunfire in the Ojota area of Lagos state as demonstrators set fire to two police vehicles. The incident occurred as police officers fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators gathered in support of the Yoruba ethnic group. Protesters – organized by the Yoruba Nation organization – were demanding an independent Yoruba nation be established in southwest Nigeria. At least one protester was killed and two police officers were wounded. Security personnel detained four protesters.
