As of the late morning hours of 26 June 2020, a significant number of police officers remain deployed in central Mexico City — where Paseo de la Reforma, a major thoroughfare, is closed to traffic — following an attack on the city’s Secretary of Citizen Security in the Lomas de Chapultepec area. Multiple gunmen attacked the secretary with high caliber weapons as he transited the thoroughfare; the secretary suffered injuries but is being treated at a nearby hospital in stable condition. At least three people were killed and seven others were injured during the shooting. Thus far, authorities have arrested 12 individuals in connection to the attack. The secretary later asserted on social media that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel was responsible for the shooting.
