On the evening of 1 June 2022, police officers in the capital Conakry fired live ammunition and tear gas at demonstrators who had taken to the streets of the Carrefour Hamdellaye suburb to protest rising fuel prices. Eyewitness reports indicate that shots were fired as demonstrators blockaded streets with burning tires and clashed with security personnel in the capital. At least one person was shot and killed. The protests broke out after the government increased the price of gasoline by 20%.
