At approximately 1330 local time (1030 UTC) on 6 February 2024, a powerful blast occurred at a popular market in northwestern Mogadishu, the capital. Local media reported that several mortar rounds were fired at the Bakara market, causing the explosion. At least 12 people were killed. The attack occurred hours after local businesses had closed to protest extortion and what they claim were illegal taxes in the area. No group has claimed responsibility for the blast; however, the al-Shabab militant group routinely carries out such attacks in Mogadishu.
