On 5 January 2020, protesters and police officers clashed following the conclusion of a demonstration against parallel traders — residents of mainland China who take advantage of existing visa rules to purchase commercial goods in bulk in Hong Kong to resell across the border — in Hong Kong’s Sheung Shui, which borders the city of Shenzhen. Between 2,500 and 10,000 protesters were participating in a march through the streets — shouting anti-government slogans and conducting sit-ins along the parade route — when police officers attempted to forcefully disperse them with baton charges and pepper spray. Officers arrested at least 60 people throughout the course of the day. During an earlier separate incident, police officers fired tear gas at a crowd of people after several demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails at a police station in Sheung Shui. At least one police vehicle was damaged; however, there were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests
