On 1 May 2023, at least 782,000 protesters took part in May Day protests in Paris and throughout the country – including in Bordeaux, Marseilles, Nantes, Toulouse and other regional cities. In the Paris Metropolitan area, approximately 112,000 protesters took part in demonstrations. After marching from the central Place de la Republic to Place de la Nation, protesters threw Molotov cocktails at police officers, smashed shop windows, and set a row of Velib hire-bikes on fire, which resulted in the outbreak of an inadvertent fire in the Velib metro station and a nearby building. At least 540 protesters were arrested throughout France, while 406 police officers were injured. Information on civilian or protester injuries is unavailable.
