On the evening of 19 October 2021, protesting military veterans armed with machetes, sticks and glass bottles clashed with security personnel outside Guatemala’s congressional building in the capital Guatemala City. The veterans, who seek additional government compensation for serving in Guatemala’s 1960-1996 civil war, set fire to vehicles and nearby buildings. Riot police officers evacuated the congressional building and used tear gas to disperse the protesters. At least 12 police officers and four journalists were injured during the protests. Police officers detained two protesters.
